Title
"Age-related vision loss risk assessment tool: Can this improve your business?"
Details
Webinar hosted on www.ocuco.com on Thursday 6th October 2011 at 9am (played again at 6pm)
Lecturer
Dr. John Nolan PhD, Institute of Vision Research, Waterford, Ireland
Description of Lecture
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the elderly, is already at epidemic levels, and is set to increase in prevalence due to longevity and world population. Current treatment options are costly and must be applied to select patients in a timely manner. Therefore, there is a clear need for emphasis to be placed on the prevention of AMD by the optometrist, who represents the first line of eyecare. This presentation discusses a) the published findings with respect to risk factors for AMD and b) the risk assessment tools available to the optometrist, and how they can benefit the patient and practice.
Learning Objectives
- Information on risk factors for AMD, through a review of the literature, appraising results from cross-sectional studies, prospective cohort studies, case series, and case control studies investigating risk for this condition.
- Risk assessment strategies and tools for the optometry practice.
- Current practice in the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom of AMD assessment and prevention techniques.
Accreditation
This webinar is accredited by the General Optical Council UK (offering 2 CET points) and the Association of Optometrists Ireland (offering 1 CET point)
